Keep Merseyside Tidy with the Great Plastic Pick Up! (Tues 8th May 2018)

Litter pickers up and down the country are joining together this coming weekend (Friday 11 – Sunday 13 May) to help keep Britain tidy and turn the tide on plastic waste.

WHAT IS IT?
The Great Plastic Pick Up is the brainchild of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign and the Daily Mail newspaper and is calling on individuals, volunteers, groups, businesses and schools to do their bit in keeping the country clean and green by clearing litter from beaches, beauty spots, streets – basically, wherever there is rubbish!

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Here at Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority we’ve teamed up with our contractor Veolia to get involved in the scheme and have opened up the region’s 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres to all local litter pickers and recyclers. If you are taking part in a Great Plastic Pick Up litter pick then bring your plastic bottles and tin cans to a nearby Household Waste Recycling Centre where the items will be separated for recycling. (We will also accept general litter, but can’t guarantee that this will be recycled.)

And great news – we know not everybody will be able to make it to a Recycling Centre over the weekend, so if you have Great Plastic Pick Up bags we’ll accept them up until Sunday 20th May.

For safety reasons only four of our Recycling Centres feature pedestrian access – Huyton, Kirkby, Old Swan and Ravenhead. If you visit any of the other ten Recycling Centres on foot then you may be advised to return in a vehicle or alternatively you could leave your litter bags with site staff who will make sure they are collected for recycling.

One more thing – we run a van permit scheme at all of our Recycling Centres so if you are planning to come to site in a van or with a large trailer then you will need to apply for a permit – please call 0151 236 0305 or visit www.merseysidewda.gov.uk/waste-recycling/permit-scheme.

FINALLY
Carl Beer, Chief Executive of MRWA, said: “Any scheme which takes litter off the streets and gets it recycled is fantastic. Everyone involved in litter picks over the weekend has my best wishes – they’re making Merseyside a place that’s clean and green and great to live in.

“We’re happy to do our bit by letting people use the Recycling Centres to drop off their litter they’ll have worked hard to pick. And don’t forget, your household recycling collection will accept plastic bottles and tins cans so if you can’t make it to a Recycling Centre you can always do your bit at home.”
